Best Practice #9: Strategic Planning
A key aspect of strategic planning is for the owner and/or CEO to obtain "buy in" from the management team on the major initiatives of the company. A successful planning process therefore must include active participation by the team. There are several ways to accomplish that mission. One that I have used successfully is nominal group technique. Thus I had all team members, including myself as the Owner/CEO, identify, debate and ultimately vote on a number of action plans to be organized and executed in the future. Typically we would come up with as many as 50 ideas and narrow them down to 3-5 finalists. Then team members would join small groups that would develop a detailed plan around that idea and present it at a later date to everyone involved in the strategic planning process. Remember: a team builds a company not just the turkey at the top of the organizational chart!
