Empowering Women Entrepreneurs

Michelle LeClair

Tuesday, May 16 • 11:45am

In 2006, Michelle opened the doors to her own insurance agency that quickly grew into one of the most successful woman owned agencies in the nation. Michelle's clients have ranged from multi-million dollar business owners to some of the most well-known actors, musicians and producers in the world.

Raised in Scientology, Michelle will share her story about the perilous exit from that organization and recovering from the destruction of her reputation and business that followed.

Michelle currently owns a consulting business with a focus toward helping women entrepreneurs, especially in the insurance industry, grow to their full potential.

Assessing Cyber Coverage in Program Business

Wednesday, May 17  •  8:00am

Moderator: John Weber - Sr. Associate Editor, AM Best
Patrick Thielen - SVP Financial Lines, Chubb
Erica Davis - SVP, Head of Specialty Products E&O, Zurich NA
James Eaton - Specialty Lines, Beazley
John Solari - Chief Underwriting Officer, Glatfelter Programs

Cybersecurity continues to dominate headlines with new breaches being discovered in a wide variety of businesses. Correctly identifying the cyber risks in a book of business and offering adequate coverage to mitigate potential losses has become a growing challenge for program administrators. The TMPAA Cyber Panel composed of three leading cyber markets, a cyber legal expert and a program administrator will address the overall state of cyber coverage, the market's appetite for providing this coverage, policy form differences, emerging cyber threats, and the following topics:
  • What are PAs doing to provide this coverage on their programs?
  • How does a PA address the risk for themselves and their client base?
  • Approaches to sell this coverage/ challenges to marketing
  • Current client uptake on this offered coverage
  • Risk of market aggregation for these policies
  • Significant losses and how they were adjudicated
Attend this presentation to educate yourself on this rapidly changing coverage and begin to identify the best solution to protect your insureds against their specific cyber exposures.

Best Practice #16: Outside Advice & Consulting

It is lonely at the top! No matter how good your team is, their input is not always objective or the best informed. First, many direct reports are reluctant to challenge the boss and secondly they may, like you, be so embedded in day to day operations that it is hard to see the forest for the trees. Worst case scenario, they may also have a personal agenda that can be at odds with the long term success of the organization.

Of course, consultants can be expensive and at times not particularly helpful. I would therefore urge every PA to network and befriend other PAs as an inexpensive way to get feedback and advice from someone who fully understands your challenges. Most people are flattered when you ask for their advice and are happy to help. Conferences and conventions are a great way to make those connections as well as an opportunity to attend seminars put on by Subject Matter experts.

Running and/or owning a business does not come with a Manual to tell you how to handle the myriad of challenges you will face. Be humble and learn from others who have already made the mistakes you are going to make!

Best Practice #22: Surveys

There are many types of surveys but in this article I would like to address Employee Surveys. It is useful, especially as your organization grows, to gauge the pulse of your staff. While all staff are nervous about speaking their minds, the rank and file are particularly risk adverse.

At the outset, it is therefore essential that the survey be anonymous and that the staff know you are dead serious about enforcing that. Sometimes the source of a certain comment is obvious but if you act on that knowledge, management's credibility will be destroyed.

There are many survey companies that can design and administer a survey for you, usually for a modest cost. I favor the surveys that focus on identifying the level of employee engagement versus measuring how much the staff likes or dislikes your Company. For example, holding people accountable does not always make people happy, but overall it is likely to focus the majority of your staff on contributing to the success of the organization.

You could write a book on the useful information you can learn from these surveys. The biggest benefit will come from sharing the overall results with your entire staff and letting them know what positive steps you are taking to address their legitimate issues.

Best Practice #1: Actuarial

Program Administrators do not always appreciate the importance of understanding and possessing credible actuarial data. But the bottom line is that no reputable insurance company in today's world is going to provide paper for a program without a data set that provides confidence the carrier will obtain an acceptable Return on Equity.

But where do you start? Some may think that the periodic carrier loss run combined premium information is all you need. In reality, an actuary requires much more including a minimum 5 years of claims counts, triangles, rate increases, and paid and reserved case losses and ALAE (Allocated Loss Adjustment Expense) by line of coverage. At the very least the PA should have this information in a format that a carrier actuary can work with in the event that a program has to be moved quickly. It will save the PA and the carrier a lot of time and increases the likelihood that the deal will get done at attractive terms.

If a PA really wants to be proactive, they should hire an internal or external actuary to produce an annual actuarial report on their program(s). And if they really want to impress the carrier actuaries, hiring (at a premium) national firms like Milliman or Tillinghast helps. These firms are often viewed as more credible than local actuarial firms the Company actuaries do not know.

Just remember: Information is power!

A column by Target University Dean – Greg Thompson, Markel Specialty

Best Practice #2: Underwriting

Smart PAs will audit their own underwriters, which offers numerous advantages. First, it shows the carrier that you are serious about consistently following underwriting guidelines and documenting files to demonstrate that a competent underwriting thought process has been followed on each account. Such practices build credibility with the carrier and will often lead to increased authority.

Secondly, your operation is most likely to perform better on the carrier audit as a result. A good practice is to design the audit so that it accommodates the underwriting "hot buttons" of the Insurance Company.

In addition, consistent self auditing should lead to better underwriting results which will ensure the longevity of the program. In addition, if the PA has a profit sharing agreement with the carrier, improved underwriting could put money in your pocket.

Last but not least, the audits can be used to evaluate underwriter performance or to identify where additional training is needed.
