Best Practice #4:  Sales

Many CEOs do not take full advantage of their status as CSO: Chief Sales Officer. They may think that this is the exclusive turf of their sales person or people, or may feel that their product does not require direct sales contact. However, when handling a sensitive situation with a key customer, or recruiting what could be a major customer, the presence of the CEO can have a very positive impact.

While not all CEOs have great sales skills, the CEO's attendance at an important client meeting, or a tactful phone call at the right time, can be crucial. There are few, if any, clients that do not like being recognized and/or appreciated by the guy in charge.

Click here for more best practices.

Best Practice #9:
Strategic Planning

A key aspect of strategic planning is for the owner and/or CEO to obtain "buy in" from the management team on the major initiatives of the company. A successful planning process therefore must include active participation by the team.

There are several ways to accomplish that mission. One that I have used successfully is nominal group technique. Thus I had all team members, including myself as the Owner/CEO, identify, debate and ultimately vote on a number of action plans to be organized and executed in the future. Typically we would come up with as many as 50 ideas and narrow them down to 3-5 finalists. Then team members would join small groups that would develop a detailed plan around that idea and present it at a later date to everyone involved in the strategic planning process.

Remember: a team builds a company not just the turkey at the top of the organizational chart!

Human Capital Management

There is an old adage in Management that we should "hire slow and fire fast." However, we often make the mistake of doing the reverse.

Any potential new hire should undergo an effective aptitude and personality test. The former confirms that the prospect has the intelligence to do the job while the latter insures that they are the kind of person that is likely to be successful on the job.

In addition, every prospect should undergo a minimum of three interviews: their direct supervisor, a peer to the supervisor, and the supervisor's boss. Differing perspectives are useful to insure a thorough review prior to making an offer.

Finally, for positions that are key to the organization or involve management skills, it can be helpful to engage an industrial psychologist. A dinner or lunch with the candidate and their spouse - who will need to support them in the job - can be helpful as well.

Bad hires not only cost you money, but they can adversely impact the morale of the existing staff. Click here for more information.

  Program Benchmarking
Questions

In early May we requested our PA members to answer four “one-click” questions to determine interest in a program operations benchmarking study.

If you did not have the opportunity to provide your feedback, here is one more opportunity.

This is not the Program Business Study. The benchmarking study would be a quantitative measurement of key PA areas of performance. Benchmarks would include profit margin, revenue per employee, and key expense items as a percentage of revenues like systems, marketing, sales and payroll. The study would be conducted by a third party vendor with strict confidentiality protocols.

Program Administrator Town Hall
Lessons Learned

Monday, April 18 • 4:00pm

Successful program administrators all make mistakes and encounter difficult challenges in their journey. Ironically, what they learn from those difficulties and how they respond to them frequently contributes to their long range success. A panel of program administrators will discuss how they created successful program operations using lessons learned from the errors they made and from the adversity that they encountered along the way. Set this time aside in your meeting schedule to attend!

The Target Markets staff dedicates this newsletter to a good friend of the Association who passed away last month. Rex Beaton had worked for Target Markets as an independent contractor for all of its 15 year history, but functioned as, and was considered to be, part of our organization. As an art director and jack-of-all-trades, Rex was involved in the production of all of our event materials, forms, documents, postcards, posters, awards and much more. Rex was a master with Photoshop and made many an Association member look much better than the photos submitted to us for marketing purposes. He was always the first person to inquire about the feedback from our members following an event, and took great pride in the work he did for us. Rex provided a great deal of his time and advice for free, and was instrumental in sharing his knowledge and files to us as we began to take on this work in-house. He made sure he left Target Markets in good shape. Rex touched many people in his 79 years in the same way he impacted the Association staff. He was a good friend who will be greatly
missed.
