Mid Year Meeting
Success in Boston 
 
 
The 2011 TMPAA Mid Year Meeting provided program business opportunities for 570 attendees, a 10% increase over last year’s meeting attendance. Over 125 different program agencies were represented at the event along with 53 program carrier markets and 59 vendors.

Attendees were provided with valuable business management ideas from keynote speaker Tom Peters who challenged the group to focus on excellence in their operations. Peter Eastwood, President and CEO of Chartis US, engaged the group with a discussion on leadership in challenging times.

Best Practice Awards were presented to AmRisk, GMI Insurance Services and Bunker Hill Underwriters. Our first ever Program Marketing Awards were given to Ascinsure Specialty Risk, Oryx Insurance Brokerage Inc. and the Brownyard Group.

"State of the Industry"
 
Program Business Study
 
The Target Markets Program Administrators Association will begin ground-breaking research to document the size, characteristics, and growth of the program business market.     

The “State of Program Business Study” will be conducted by the research firm Advisen, and released at the Summit in October.
 
Argo Group International Holdings Ltd. is sponsoring the research effort.  Argo Group, a carrier member of TMPAA, is an international underwriter of specialty insurance and reinsurance products in areas of the property and casualty markets. It operates niche insurance programs in the United States through its Commercial Specialty business segment.
 
The objective of the research is to provide the industry with information that documents the size, dynamics and trends in the program business market. The analysis will begin with a survey of program administrators, carriers and managing general agents. Additional data and information will be drawn from the Advisen databases of retail brokers, managing general agents and underwriters and wholesale brokers. The research will also leverage Advisen data on policies, premiums, coverage and losses. 
 

Target Markets Member information will be key to the success of this research.  Surveys will be distributed following the Mid Year Meeting.

TMPAA Charities will be supporting our troops again at the Mid Year Meeting.  The Charities board has chosen a group that operates in the Boston area to once again provide care packages for soldiers in active duty locations.

Named TMPAA President Elect
 
 
The TMPAA Board has selected Dave Springer to fill the position of TMPAA President Elect.  Dave will assume the position of President at the conclusion of current President Jeremy Hitzig's term in 2013.

David Springer
has been President of NIP Programs, a national leader in Program Administration, since 2005.  Since taking over NIP Programs, Mr. Springer has developed the business into a world class program administrator.  With a focus on developing leading edge business processes that are scaleable to support growth, Mr. Springer has made dramatic improvements in efficiency and the service that NIP Programs provides to all of its customers, from carriers to brokers to insureds.  Over that time, NIP Programs has also grown its program offerings from one active program to twelve, with several more in various stages of research and development.

 

The high standards of the operation were recognized in 2007 when NIP Programs was awarded the prestigious Best Practices Designation from the Target Markets Program Administrators Association (TMPAA).  Evaluation for TMPAA’s Best Practices Designation involves a rigorous and complete third party review of the business operations of nominees, and recognizes those that are best of breed operations. 

 

Mr. Springer’s insurance career spans more than 25 years.  Prior to joining NIP Programs he held senior executive positions with profit and loss responsibility at AmTrust Financial Services, Inc., Prudential Insurance Company and Small Business Underwriters, Inc.  Mr. Springer has a long track record of profitability managing property, casualty and benefit insurance underwriting operations. Earlier in his Prudential Insurance Company career he was an operations and systems consultant

 

Mr. Springer believes that providing superior quality comes from employees with the absolute highest levels of integrity and dedication to customer service, accurate product pricing, and efficient use of new technologies that reduce costs and allow for greater flexibility and convenience to insurance producers and their clients.

 

Mr. Springer is a member of several industry associations and was elected in 2007 to the Board of Directors of the Target Markets Program Administrators Association.  Mr. Springer graduated from the University of Delaware with a BA in Arts and Science.

TMPAA Marketing Campaign Competition 
 
TMPAA is teaming up with the highly regarded Insurance Marketing & Communication Association (IMCA) to offer all TMPAA Program Administrator Members the opportunity to submit their best marketing campaigns. The inaugural award will be called the TMPAA Program Marketing Campaign Award.
  • Program Administrator Members are encouraged to submit one or more entries prior to April 1.
  • Entries must include a minimum of two communication vehicles that share a common campaign theme.
  • Total campaigns must have been in the marketplace between 1/1/10 and 3/15/11.

Now is the time to start reviewing past-year’s marketing campaigns and decide which initiative or initiatives will be your operation’s best entry for the TMPAA Program Marketing Campaign Award competition. Three winning campaigns will be announced at the Mid Year Meeting.

Coming this Spring!

As stated in previous correspondence, Target University is geared for owners/ CEOs or individuals that the owners and/or CEOs have chosen to potentially assume a major leadership role in the future. Coursework would also be applicable for Insurance Company Program Leaders or individuals who will assume a major leadership role in the future.
 
Completion of the Target University process will result in a CPL (Certified Programs Leader) Designation from the TMPAA.

Jeremy Hitzig is the CEO of The Distinguished Programs Group, a New York-based program administrator specializing in the real estate industry.  Jeremy has been a TMPAA Board Member since 2008. Distinguished Programs was a founding member of Target Markets and is a recipient of the Best Practices designation.
 
"I welcome the challenge to continue building the TMPAA which has become an important resource for Program Administrators, and for this industry segment in setting benchmarks for Best Practice standards  The next two years will see the implementation of additional supports for program business professionals, the most exciting of which will be Target University and our CPL (Certified Programs Leader) Designation. TMPAA Marketing Campaign Competition Announced
 
TMPAA is teaming up with the highly regarded Insurance Marketing & Communication Association (IMCA) to offer all TMPAA Program Administrator Members the opportunity to submit their best marketing campaigns. The inaugural award will be called the TMPAA Program Marketing Campaign Award.
  • Program Administrator Members are encouraged to submit one or more entries prior to April 1.
  • Entries must include a minimum of two communication vehicles that share a common campaign theme.
  • Total campaigns must have been in the marketplace between 1/1/10 and 3/15/11.

Now is the time to start reviewing past-year’s marketing campaigns and decide which initiative or initiatives will be your operation’s best entry for the TMPAA Program Marketing Campaign Award competition. Three winning campaigns will be announced at the Mid Year Meeting.

We received very good feedback from the attendees at last year's meeting about this event.  The “Meet and Greet” is designed to allow program administrators to hear about our Carrier members program strategy and appetites.  The event is not designed for involved discussions about program submissions, but could be used to set meetings at another point during the event. We had several suggestions to keep things moving by signaling every 10 or 15 minutes so new introductions could be made.         

This two hour event on Tuesday morning 10-19-10 will ensure that Program Administrator Attendees will be able to connect with all of our carrier members. 

Our traditional carrier meetings will still occur later that same afternoon for more formal exploration of program business opportunities

TMPAA E&O Risk Retention Captive

The TMPAA Risk Retention Group introduced at the Mid Year Meeting is moving forward based on the interest expressed by our members. We would like to provide an opportunity for all our members to be part of the core group of founders, and be a part of the group that takes the first step to really control their claims and defense costs – in a soft market or hard market.

TMPAA Charities Networking Golf Tournament


The proceeds from our networking Golf Tournament is the primary funding source for TMPAA Charities.  We need sponsors to make this work.

 
Unlike other golf events, pairings in this tournament are made to maximize the networking opportunities between Carriers, Program Administrators and Vendors.  Our first three Tournaments were tremendous successes.

Plan to arrive early and enjoy this networking opportunity.  Our Tournament is designed for golfers of all skill (or lack there of) levels.

Silent Auction
 
Do you have a skill you are willing to donate, a service you are willing to contribute, a piece of valuable sports memorabilia, or vacation time at a beach house?

Then TMPAA Charities is looking for you!

In coordination with the many events being held at this year’s Tenth Annual Summit in Scottsdale, Arizona, the TMPAA will be holding its first “Silent Auction” to benefit TMPAA Charities. We are asking members of the Association to donate items of value to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
Items will not need to be brought to the Summit event in October. A picture, description, and estimated minimum bid of the items/services you are willing to donate are all we need to make this work.

"Dating Game"

The Leadership 2.0 group is developing presentation for the Teneth Annual Summit on Monday 10-18 at 4:00. 

The presentation will explore what Carriers and Program Administrators are looking for in good program partners.  Presentation will take the form of the
"Dating Game"
 
The TMPAA is targeting the next generation of program business leadership, and will look to provide networking, education, and professional development for this identified group.

Leadership at the
 Mid Year Meeting
 
 
2010 Mid Year Meeting Review

 

Over 520 Program Business Professionals participated in the 2010 TMPAA Mid Year Meeting featuring a leadership theme kicked off by General Colin Powell (Ret.).
 

Program Agency Registrations represented 40% of the total attendance and included representatives from 110 Program Administrator/MGA’s

 

Feedback received directly from the attendees at the meeting was overwhelmingly positive, which was supported by the 150 Meeting evaluations completed after the event.
 
High points of the meeting were the keynote address from Colin Powell which attracted almost all meeting attendees to the General Session.
 
The “Social Media” presentation put together by Zurich apparently filled an education need of our members, as that one workshop had close to 200 participants.  The presentation from Marty Becker on Wednesday morning was also well received by the group.

US Risk / Lighthouse Underwriters Awarded TMPAA Best Practice Honors

 

The Target Markets Program Administrators Association (TMPAA) awarded US Risk / Lighthouse Underwriters the Association’s Best Practice Designation at their recent Mid Year Meeting in Baltimore, MD.

Looking for CE Credits ?
 
The Association is providing a CE Credit Course at the Mid Year Meeting.  The "Leadership and Ethics" course is being filed in all 50 States for 2 credits.  Make arrangements to attend on Wednesday 4-14-10 at 10:00 AM.
 

 

Mid Year Meeting Hotel Reminder
 
The Association reserves a large block of rooms for the Mid Year Meeting.  As a result, we are responsible to pay for any rooms not used for the event.

Please contact the Association if you need to cancel a room reservation.  Any cancellations after 3-29-2010 will need to be paid for in full by the attendee unless we can refill from our wait list.

If you are seeking a room at the Renaissance Harborplace, please notify the Association  and request to be placed on the wait list.  We expect to move a number of people off this list and into the hotel.

Message from the President

TMPAA Members and Friends,

Considering this brutal winter, I'm sure that most of you are looking forward to enjoying a touch of spring in Baltimore at the Mid Year Meeting.

Of a more serious nature is our shared concern over the economic recovery, the political process, and the constantly changing global issues.
  All of these matters influence the insurance climate and the economic world of clients, and thus once again, we should all benefit from the open exchange of ideas and information for which TMPAA is known.

 

To provide strategies on leadership, we are privileged to have a former Joint Chief of Staff, National Security Advisor, and U.S. Secretary of State, General Colin Powell (Ret.) as our keynote speaker.

 

Addressing the state of the insurance industry will be W. Marston (Marty) Becker, newly announced President and CEO of Alterra Capital Holdings Limited, the new company created by the merger of Max Capital Group and Harbor Point.   As a veteran of our industry, and experienced in the program administrator segment, Marty is well-suited to the task.

 

Target Markets continues to look for new resources it can provide for its members.   Be sure to follow our progress on initiatives like Target University and the Leadership 2.0 (under 40) group.   Plan to attend the Marketing/Social Media, HR Outsourcing and E&O presentations, all designed to help you run a Best Practice Program Business Operation.

The TMPAA Leadership 2.0 Group’s next event is scheduled for Monday April 12, 2010 at the Association's Mid Year Meeting in Baltimore.

The presentation, “Developing Your Idea Into a Profitable Program” will be provided by TMPAA Board Member, David Springer, President of NIP Programs.

TMPAA Membership Coordinator
Now Part of the TEAM

The TMPAA has set a goal to have 300 Program Administrator Members in 2011.  To ensure that we meet this goal, the Association has hired Monica Elischer as the TMPAA Membership Coordinator.
 

Prior to becoming a member of the Target Markets Team, Monica  worked the health and life arena through Aflac , and provided  internet sales marketing at ByTheZip.com.   She has  held multiple positions in  administration/sales throughout her career.  Monica is  currently responsible for enhancing the Association’s  Program Administrator  membership base.  She holds a bachelor degree in Marketing/Public Relations from Syracuse University .


We will be looking for all current members to help with this task by providing us with Program Administrator referrals.  Current members are our best ambassadors to inform prospects about the resources and potential of this Association dedicated to the unique challanges of Program Administration.
 
You can expect to hear from our Membership Coordinator soon.

Byron Way named TMPAA Leadership 2.0 Chairperson
 
L. Byron Way, President and COO of Bunker Hill Insurance Agency, has been selected as Chairperson of the Target Markets Program Administrators Association's Leadership 2.0 group.  The Leadership 2.0 group is comprised of Program Administrators under age 40.
 
 “Target Markets is looking to cultivate the young talent in our Association to help keep program business a strong industry segment for many years to come”, said Mr. Way.  “Our plan is to hold unique networking and educational events at the Association's two annual meetings for members who are currently under 40.  In addition to creating a network of young program specialists to explore program opportunities, we are interested in becoming influential as an advisory body for the TMPAA Board as they continue to build the Association”.
 
William Kronenberg, TMPAA President said, “The Leadership 2.0 initiative is important to the Association to stay relevant, create the next generation of Program Business leaders, and utilize the energy and ideas produced by this group”.  The TMPAA Board is very happy to support their growth in any way possible.  We have full confidence that Byron Way and his co-chairs, John Paulk lll (Britt/Paulk Insurance) and Brian Norman (Norman Spencer Insurance) will provide the leadership needed to energize our younger members”.

TMPAA to Develop Captive for Members E&O Coverage
 
 
The Target Markets Program Administrators Association announced the development of an Errors and Omissions Vehicle designed specifically for its Program Specialist members.  The plan for a Target Markets Captive will be outlined at Mid Year Meeting. 
 
“In today’s market you have to fight for every commission dollar and watch every expense”, said Glenn Clark, TMPAA board member and past president.  The TMPAA is exploring how the association can help our members purchase E&O more efficiently, while simultaneously providing the best defense counsel and loss control in the industry.  All designed specifically for Program Administrators”.
 
The TMPAA meeting agenda includes a special workshop to outline the specific options available to members with this new facility.  The Target Markets Captive  will respond to current market conditions with tailored coverage that provides members with a long-term solution for their professional liability exposures.
 
“Attendees can expect to hear details regarding how to join, the covers planned, the risk management services to be offered and the economic benefits of the facility” stated Tracey Carragher CEO of Breckenridge Insurance Services.  “Our plan is to generate active participation from meeting attendees that shapes how this new facility will serve the members of the TMPAA, and respond to their particular needs”. 
 
Breckenridge is a TMPAA Strategic Partner responsible for the development of this Association initiative.
      
   

The TMPAA to Provide
Solutions for managing your Agency Human Resources / Benefits Responsibilities
Focusing on your core program insurance business is only one aspect of running a successful agency. Managing Human Resources, Payroll, Employee Benefits and Risk Management, is the other critical component of any successful business strategy.
 

Attendees at this year Mid Year Meeting will have the opportunity of attending a special workshop dedicated to this issue.  Information will be provided about how one program administrator  found a solution to managing the human resources side of his business  by outsourcing these functions and directing more attention and energy on the on revenue-generating task to grow his business.

The Target Markets Program Administrators announced the creation of a strategic partnership with Breckenridge Insurance Services

 

“Since its inception in October of 2001, the TMPAA has partnered with the best Program Administrators, Carriers and Vendors to grow our group into the premiere Association for Program Administration in the industry,” stated Glenn Clark, President of Rockwood Programs Inc, and Association founder.  “Our membership consists of 200 PA’s, 50+ carrier partners and 50+ specialist vendor partners. Over the past two years we have sought to bring in a financial partner who can help us to take our Association to the next level without changing the core dynamics that have made us what we are today.  Through a national search conducted by Mystic Capital (also a TMPAA member) we have reached an agreement with Breckenridge Insurance Services.  We sincerely believe that their interests align most directly with our membership base.”  Some of the benefits brought to the TMPAA by Breckenridge are as follows:

 

  • No change in the management of the day to day of the TMPAA. In fact we’ll be adding full time resources in education and membership coordination.
  • A financial resource to share in the venue contract obligations for future meetings (scheduled five years in advance).
  • Professional management oversight of TMPAA Charities and TMPAA University (both 501 c 3 organizations of TMPAA).

TMPAA Membership Coordinator

The TMPAA has set a goal to have 300 Program Administrator Members in 2011.  To ensure that we meet this goal, the Association will be bringing a Membership Coordinator on board who will focus on this task.  

We will be looking for all current members to help with this task by providing us with Program Administrator referrals.  Current members are our best ambassadors to inform prospects about the resources and potential of this Association dedicated to the unique challanges of Program Administration.
 
You can expect to hear from our Membership Coordinator soon.
