The State of Program Business Study

The objective of this research is to provide the program industry with data that documents trends in the size and dynamics of the program business market, along with valuable benchmarking information to assist with your future program business planning. Results will be available to TMPAA members and presented at the Summit in October. Survey responses are strictly confidential and viewable only to Advisen acting as a contractor for the Association.

Alex Tsetsenekos is the Head of Business Development for MGAero Risk Solutions. Recently, Alex was the founder of Archimedes Analytics LLC, a firm that provides insurance, data and technology consulting services throughout the insurance value chain. For insurance clients or InsureTech startups, Alex has addressed a variety of client needs including:

  • Interim Chief Underwriting Officer for a new Homeowners carrier

Rick McCathron brings 25 years of P&C experience to his role as Hippo’s Head of Insurance. Rick is a Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter and a Certified Insurance Counselor and has held senior executive positions at well-respected insurance companies including First Connect Insurance as its President & CEO, Superior Access Insurance as its President & CEO and Mercury Insurance Group (NYSE-MCY) as its Regional Vice President.  At Mercury, Rick had full P&L responsibility overseeing underwriting, claims, product, pricing and distribution for half of Mercury’s operations geographically.  At First Connect, Rick shifted the paradigm and brought to market an entirely new way of thinking about car insurance.  Rick has a passion to modernize the insurance industry from underwriting, distribution, product design, to customer service and consumer expectations.  Rick found the perfect fit at Hippo Insurance.


Ty Sagalow best resolution  

Ty Sagalow is a founding member of Lemonade. Founded in 2015, Lemonade is the first licensed and regulated InsureTech insurance company in the United States. Lemonade offers homeowners and renters insurance powered by artificial intelligence and behavioral economics. Launched in September 2016 in New York, Lemonade Insurance Company is operating in both New York, California and Illinois (as of 5/10/17) with expected operations in multiple additional states in the coming weeks and months. On July 1, 2017, Ty retired from his position as Chief Insurance Officer of Lemonade but continues as a board member of the Lemonade Insurance Company, and regularly advises other companies in the Fintech/InsurTech space.

Ty is a 36 year senior insurance executive veteran. Most of Ty’s career was spent at AIG where over a 25 year period he held various positions including Chief Underwriting Officer and General Counsel of AIG Executive Liability (D&O, E&O), Chief Operating Officer of AIG eBusiness Risk Solutions (Cyber insurance) and President of AIG Product Development. Following AIG, he was Chief Innovation Officer of Zurich North American and Chief Innovation Officer of Tower Group. Immediately prior to Lemonade, Ty founded Innovation Insurance Group, LLC, a premier consulting firm to the insurance industry.

Mr. Sagalow is considered on the world’s experts in innovation in the insurance industry having been credited with creating various insurance products including Y2k Insurance, (Entity Cover) Directors and Officers Insurance, Cyber insurance, Reputation Insurance, Collectible Authenticity Insurance and Intellectual Property Collateral Insurance. He is also the host of the series Innovations in Insurance With Ty Sagalow and What’s New in Insurance, both produced by World Risk and Insurance News.

Mr. Sagalow is a frequent author and speaker. His works include @Risk: Internet and E-Commerce Insurance and Reinsurance Legal Issues and Directors & Officers Insurance Handbook.  He has appeared on CNBC, WPIX-TV, FOX, PBS and Bloomberg Radio, and he has spoken before various tech, legal and insurance forums on issues including the White House, Department of Homeland Security, and Congress. For the past two years, Mr. Sagalow has been a frequent speaker on InsureTech issues and insurance innovation.

Mr. Sagalow is a cum laude graduate of Georgetown University Law Center and holds a LLM (Master of Laws) from New York University Law School.

Seth Simon is Director of Claims for Slice Insurance Technologies, a New York based insurance startup providing insurance for sharing economy risks including homeshare and rideshare.  For 20 years, he has held Claims and Training leadership roles with State Farm, AIG and Chubb with a focus on personal home and auto risks, and the special needs of high net worth customers.  Seth leads insurance teams by cultivating an understanding of insurance products and the importance of delivering exceptional customer service.   He regularly lectures to international audiences on insurance topics and holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in the Sciences from City University of NY as well as AIC, CPCU, broker and adjuster certifications.

Tim McDermott, CPCU, ARe, is currently a Multi-line Underwriter and Product Manager for Munich Re Digital Partners, a global venture designed to develop innovative propositions with digital insurance start-ups and digital verticals. Tim is responsible for managing the product development, underwriting, growth, and profitability of various commercial insurance portfolios.

Previously, Tim was an Insurance Programs Underwriter in Munich Re’s Specialty Markets Division, where he held similar responsibilities for the large broker and bank-owned PA/MGA client group. His underwriting experience extends across several classes and lines of business, including commercial property, general liability, auto liability, workers compensation, and professional liability.

Tim earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Temple University, where he majored in Risk Management & Insurance, and holds the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) professional designations.

Tim is a native of Philadelphia, and currently lives in Langhorne, PA. He is active in his community and serves on the board of directors of a local non-profit organization.
